The historic Dorchester Savings Bank and an adjoining vacant lot in Upham’s Corner will be redeveloped into a six-story mixed-use development and community arts space.

Made possible through a partnership between The Preservation of Affordable Housing and Dorchester Bay Economic Development Corporation, Columbia Crossing will offer 48 income-restricted affordable rental homes.

An integration with city’s Artist Housing Certification program will ensure that 20% of the units are reserved for artists. Developers hope the building’s arts amenity space will benefit the community and advance the Upham’s Corner Arts & Cultural District revitalization effort.

A “glow box” design feature facing the street will serve as a display and performance area.

“It’s always exciting to be able to celebrate new affordable housing going into construction, especially when that development will add new uses that will reinforce this area of Dorchester as a place for art and innovation,” said Chief of Planning Kairos Shen in a press release. “I am excited to see this new mix of uses come to fruition in the community, especially through the adaptive reuse of the historic and iconic Dorchester Savings Bank.”
