Massachusetts named one of the safest states

by Elizabeth Kanzeg Rowland

Massachusetts provides safety for residents, according to a new study from WalletHub that ranked the state the second safest in the nation.

Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Federal Bureau of Investigation and other sources, Wallethub analyzed key metrics like climate risk, unemployment and crime rates in all 50 states. Massachusetts was second only to Vermont.

The Bay State’s high levels of job security helped secure its high ranking. Massachusetts has the third-best job security rate in the country and the fourth-best annual growth rate for new jobs, helping residents demonstrate financial stability. The state also claims the 11th-smallest proportion of people without a bank account and the sixth-fewest non-business bankruptcy filings per capita.

Plus, Massachusetts provides safety for families. Local parents express confidence in their children’s safety in the classroom, with the state boasting the second-highest share of children aged six through 17 whose parents definitely agree that their children are safe while at school. Massachusetts students also face some of the lowest bullying incidence rates in the nation.

And for those concerned about safety on the road, Massachusetts saw the least traffic fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles of travel of any state in the nation.

“The safest states in America protect their residents from harm in a multitude of different ways, from keeping crime rates low and maintaining safe roadways to having strong economies and job markets that prevent people from falling into dangerous financial situations,” said Chip Lupo, WalletHub analyst. “They have high levels of occupational safety and disaster preparedness, too. In addition, states are made safer by efforts that individual residents take, such as forming a neighborhood watch or working in firefighting and EMT jobs at high rates.”
