Massachusetts makes list of states with lowest crime rates in the U.S.

by Liz Hughes

Massachusetts has ranked among the top 10 safest states in the nation when it comes to personal safety.

A recent report by innerbody used FBI data on crimes against individuals from its National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) to determine which states were the most and least dangerous. The Bay State ranked No. 9.

States were scored based on crime types and the prevalence of each per 10,000 residents. Each incident was then multiplied by its weighted value. Homicide offenses had a 50% weight, kidnapping/abduction 11%, human trafficking offenses 11%, sex offenses 11% and assaults 8%.

The report found the majority of states in the top 10 were in the Northeast, while five of the top 10 states for most crimes were located in the South.

New Jersey was determined to be the safest state in the country, followed by Vermont and Connecticut. Rhode Island and Maryland rounded out the top five. New York, Maine and Idaho took the sixth, seventh and eighth spots, and Hawaii came in at No. 10.

On the flipside, Nevada ranked No. 1 for having the most crime, followed by New Mexico and Arkansas, with Tennessee and Alaska rounding out the top five. Alabama, South Carolina and North Dakota were sixth, seventh and eighth, followed by Texas at No. 9 and South Dakota at No. 10.
