The Cambridge Housing Authority acquired two six-story residential buildings and plans to convert all 79 of the structures’ residential units to homes for low- and moderate-income households.

Located at 1648 and 1654 Massachusetts Ave. between Harvard Square and Porter Square, the properties have historic value. Both buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places and were designed by architect J.S. Harold in 1898.

“This acquisition transforms signature historic buildings in the heart of Cambridge into affordable homes for families,” said Cambridge Housing Authority CEO Clara Fraden in a press release. “We need more affordable places in our community where families can settle, raise children, put down roots and stay long term. This purchase creates opportunities to make that possible.”
