The Boston Planning Department advanced plans for the Harvard Enterprise Research Campus, which will include a greenway between Allston Honan Library and the Charles River.
Phase B of development on the 30-acre mixed-use district now awaits approval from the BPDA Board. In response to community feedback, amended plans for Phase B focus on cohesion with the surrounding neighborhood and the addition of public green spaces.
“As stated in the draft plan, I appreciate that Harvard University has committed that 20% of the ERC’s total developable land area will be publicly accessible open space,” said District 9 City Councilor Liz Breadon in a press release. “The future continuous east-west greenway will be a fantastic amenity that will serve to better connect the Allston neighborhood to the Charles River.”
Beyond green space, the project will feature a mix of housing types as well as commercial and office spaces. Using a strategy called “residential edges,” developers hope to blend the new district with surrounding residential areas by placing housing along Stadium Road and Cambridge Street.
“This plan will allow the Harvard ERC to evolve as a fully connected community, complete with accessible green space, affordable housing and innovation space,” said Boston’s Chief of Planning Kairos Shen.
The project’s now completed Phase A received approval in 2022. A completion date for Phase B has not been announced.
