GREB backs removal of parking requirements for residential developments

by Elizabeth Kanzeg Rowland

The Greater Boston Real Estate Board issued a statement of support for a zoning text amendment that removes parking requirements for new housing developments in Boston.

Issued by Boston City Councilors Sharon Durkan and Henry Santana, the amendment would eliminate off-street parking minimums for residential projects.

In the text, they argued that removing these requirements will increase the appeal of building in Boston, noting that currently, the cost of adding required parking often exceeds potential rental income for developers.

“As the Massachusetts housing crisis worsens, we remain strongly opposed to any policy that restricts housing growth,” said GREB Board CEO Greg Vasil. “Boston leaders must work to eliminate all unnecessary and costly requirements, like parking mandates, in order to make the city more attractive to developers who want to build new housing here. The city is in desperate need of real solutions to increase supply and lower costs, and removing nonessential policies is a simple step to help us overcome the housing crisis.”
