Anchor Point is set to break ground in Beverly this month on Phase 1 of a project which will bring 77 units of affordable family housing to the area.
Once complete, the project will include two affordable housing apartment buildings, as well as a community building, playgrounds and walking paths at the intersection of Tozer and Sohier Roads in Beverly.
Harborlight Community Partners, a Beverly-based non-profit, is developing the 5-acre project along with SV Design and Groom Construction.
According to a company release, The project will support those who earn 60% or less of the area’s median income, and 20% of the development’s housing will be set aside for families who suffered homelessness.
Harborlight Community Partners’ Executive Director Andrew DeFranza said the project is coming at the right time as the need for “high quality, service-enriched and affordable homes has never been more evident.”
“Our region is a beautiful one that remains largely out of reach for people we depend on every day,” DeFranza said. “Anchor Point is essential toward mitigating housing insecurity and equity in our region.”
Last October, Anchor Point was the recipient of one of Governor Charlie Baker’s Administration’s 2020 Affordable Rental Housing Awards for the development of affordable housing. Those awards provided more than $105.7 million in funding and allocated $53 million in tax credits to 28 projects in 19 communities, including Beverly.
“Anchor Point is a critical step toward addressing the city’s housing needs for all our neighbors,” Beverly Mayor Michael Cahill said in a press release. “These new homes and the infrastructure improvements that will be made to the area are essential to the broader efforts making our whole community strong and a desirable place to live.”
“Too many North Shore residents continue to struggle to find quality housing that they can afford. Anchor Point will serve as a tremendous resource for many families that need housing security and stability,” said Senator Joan B. Lovely (D-Salem).
The first round of tenancy will be by lottery. Applications will be available by late fall 2021.
