After more than two decades in mortgage lending, Rick Scherer is driven by a simple idea: helping people achieve homeownership can change the trajectory of their lives.
This belief traces back to Scherer’s childhood, when he watched his mother overcome significant challenges to purchase a home. “She worked three jobs and was on welfare, yet her loan officer treated her with respect and guided her through the process,” he recalls. “Seeing the impact that had on her made me realize the power this profession can have.”
Now with 24 years in the mortgage industry, Scherer serves as chief strategy officer at NewFed Mortgage, where he helps shape the company’s national growth strategy while originating loans and mentoring loan officers. He remains active in production, which keeps him connected to the realities of the business. “Staying in the trenches helps me better understand what our loan officers and clients experience every day,” he explains.
Scherer’s leadership philosophy is grounded in integrity and accountability, guided by a principle he often shares with his team: “Doing the right thing is always the right thing.” He focuses on building collaborative teams that deliver exceptional service while adapting to an evolving industry.
Beyond his work inside the company, Scherer is increasingly active in mortgage industry advocacy. He works with the Community Home Lenders of America and the Mortgage Bankers Association, collaborating with industry leaders and policymakers to support responsible lending practices. He regularly engages with top mortgage executives across the country on initiatives to improve technology, operational efficiency and the overall borrower experience.
Outside of work, Scherer supports HomeStart, a nonprofit dedicated to preventing and ending homelessness. An avid skier, golfer and boater, he enjoys spending time outdoors with his family.
