Wendy English is a vice president and sales manager with Century 21 Commonwealth working in Medfield.
What was your first job in the realty industry? I started in real estate as a sales associate in 1998. I was 28 years old and it was a great time to start out. The market was what I would call ‘normal,’ and the MLS was just transitioning from the MLS books to an online database.
Where did you grow up? Holliston, Mass.
Growing up, what did you want to be? Growing up I had a couple of interests that I dreamed about turning in to a career – a trip to the New England Aquarium and summers spent at the cape made me dream of a career as an oceanographer when I was in elementary school. In my middle school years I aspired to be an olympic swimmer. Once I hit high school those ideas had gone out the window!
What do you do to relax when you’re stressed? Yoga is a great stress reliever, and I’d love to get to classes more often. Wine and a good flick in the evening is also a favorite way to decompress after a long week.
If you could have lunch with a well-known figure (living or not), who would it be and why? I have a favorite author, Jen Lancaster, and I’d love to lunch with her. Jen’s books are laugh out loud funny and she parlayed her blog about being unemployed in to a book deal and her first book, “Bitter is the New Black.”
Jen survived and thrived after the early 90’s .com crash, and I consider myself a survivor of the recent real estate and financial crash. Am I bitter? No. But I sure do wear a lot of black!
Where is your favorite place to hang out? There are so many great spots it is tough to choose. I’ll meniton a spot in Medfield, the town where my office is located, called Noon Hill Grill on Rt. 109. Try the hummus platter – so good!
What do you love most about the industry? I love the problem solving part of the business. I am not one to give up easily or take no for an answer. It’s great when you can help the buyer, seller and real estate agents get to the closing table.
How do you distinguish yourself from the crowd of agents? In my role as sales manager, I help the agents in my office, as well as my office itself, distinguish ourselves from the crowd.
We do it with high quality and creative marketing pieces, concierge-like client care and a Web strategy that brings the agents and our listings to the forefront.
I also host a radio show, The Neighborhood, and have a blog that goes along with it. The show and the blog have been very well recieved and definately sets my office and the agents who have come on the show apart from the crowd in a big way.
What is the most difficult aspect of your job? It is hard for me to deal with agents and offices who do not follow the Realtor code of ethics, and who conduct business in a way that reflects badly on everyone in the industry. There are not many agents and companies out there, but there are a few and it makes it tougher on all of us in the business.
Where do you go to network and meet new clients? Wherever I happen to be is viewed as a networking opportunity. Agents in my company are encouraged to wear a name badge wherever they go. I ran in to a friend last year who had a pin on that said, “Ask Me About Girl Scout Cookies.” Had she not had the pin on, would I had known to ask? Maybe, maybe not. As it happened, I had been looking for the Thanks a Lot cookies and she had some right in her trunk I could purchase. Score!
It’s the same with real estate. Advertise what you do in every possible way, you never know who is looking for your service.
What has been your greatest accomplishment? In a declining market, I have run an office that has improved exponentially each year. Century 21 Commonwealth has improved each year for five consecutive years in spite of the economy and the down real estate market. This year will mark our 3rd consecutive year as a Centurion Award winning office, and we also set out to achieve the Quality Service Award from Century 21. Fingers crossed we will recieve that award. The agents really came together and worked toward these goals, and I look forward to celebrating it at the company award celebration in the new year.
What was the last good movie you saw or book you read? My husband and I watched ‘Limitless’ starring Bradley Cooper recently. For some reason the movie was not one that I had heard of but I’m so glad we watched it. Highly reccomend it! It’s about a down on his luck writer who is given a cognitive enhancement drug that gives him access to all of his brain power. He’s got a limited supply of this miracle drug, which makes things interesting, and the movie has some great twists, turns and a surprise ending. That’s all I’ll say, watch it and you’ll see why I loved it.
What is your favorite restaurant? I love fresh seafood and have never had a bad meal at Legal Seafood. To top it off, my husband and I had our first date at the one in the Pru. Legal Seafood tops my list of restaurants because of that great memory – in additon to the great food and atmosphere.
Architecturally speaking, what is your favorite building in Boston? I love Faneuil Hall. It is classic New England. The hall is simple, stately and oozes history. My daughter graduated from a UMass Boston Masters program for teachers last summer and the ceremony was held at Faneuil Hall. The special setting helped make an important day all the more special.
What kind of car do you drive? I drive a Volvo Cross Country station wagon. Hopefully it will last for a LONG time. Comfortable, utilitarian and handles well in whatever weather the New England winter throws at me. It’s important in real estate to be able to get around in the wintry weather.
Smartphone or paper? Both, but mostly smartphone or tablet.
What is your favorite city after Atlanta? To live or visit? To visit: NYC. To live: San Diego.
In 10 words or less, what is your advice for someone new to the industry? The business is harder than you thought, stay the course. (10 words or less is tough!)
What’s your favorite real estate iPhone/Android app? I love Trello. It’s like having your sticky notes organized online. Have a great idea? Create a card for it on Trello. You need a plan but you also need the strategies you will use to complete your plan and Trello is a project management app that works really well for real estate.

Who are your favorite people to follow on Twitter? I tend to use twitter for up to the minute news so I follow a large number of reporters and news outlets. A top favorite is Inman News @inmannews @inmannext.
