Boston launches initiative to meet demand for ‘missing middle’ housing

by Liz Hughes

Boston’s Mayor Michelle Wu has announced the release of requests for proposals for the city’s “Co-Creating Boston’s Future Decker” initiative, designed to address housing needs by developing vacant land.

Developed in collaboration with the mayor’s Housing Innovation Lab (iLab) and the Boston Society for Architecture (BSA), the initiative invites developers to submit proposals to create multi-family housing on city-owned properties in Dorchester and Mattapan. The initiative is to address what the mayor’s office calls “missing middle” housing and once constructed would range from six to 15 for-sale housing units.

Using Boston’s triple-decker housing model, there are five key themes to the project requirements including adaptability, living together, sustainability, materials and affordability.

Applicants can apply for one or both of the parcels and submissions are due Feb. 14, 2024.

Once applications are received, the iLab and BSA plan to showcase and gather feedback before selecting the winning development team.
