Much to the surprise of potential buyers, many of America’s largest cities boast a variety of ways for residents to stay active and explore — especially cities like Boston. In fact, Men’s Health named Boston the eighth most adventurous city using data from a recent Metrograde analysis of the 100 most populous cities in America.

While a lot of major cities don’t offer immediate access to the sprawling acres of open land you’d find near the suburbs, Boston might just be the exception. The area’s wide array of local parks — 217 to be exact — and easy access to outdoor activities make ‘America’s Walking City’ a hotspot for those who wish to live on the edge while still residing in an urban environment.

What Makes Boston Stick Out

Boston certainly isn’t the most populous city out of America’s largest metropolitan areas. Rather, the city has reserved much of the open space for making sure its 673,184 residents have plenty of places to walk, bike, hike and sail. One of its most popular spots actually houses multiple parks combined into one attraction — the Emerald Necklace, a 1,100-acre chain of nine parks, offers a green getaway even in the heart of the city.

You’re probably familiar with Martin Scorsese’s acclaimed 2010 thriller “Shutter Island.” What you might not know is that Boston is home to the very island used to shoot the film — plus an additional 33 more. The cluster makes up the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area, and tourists and locals alike frequent the area for easy access to lush trails and open swimming areas. ‘Shutter Island’ itself — known officially as Peddocks Island — is a great place for visitors to camp out under the stars and hike.

Healthy Daily Routines

Bostonians also travel to work on foot more than residents in the country’s other major cities. It’s the third most walkable city in the country — and a safe one to walk at that — and clearly residents make use of that distinction.

The 2016 Benchmarking Report by the Alliance for Biking & Walking found that 16.7 percent of Boston residents either bike or walk to work each day instead of driving or using forms of public transportation. The city stood at the top of the list amidst other notoriously active metros such as San Francisco, where 13.9 percent of residents reported biking or walking to work. As a whole, it’s no secret those who live in Boston enjoy a predominately outdoorsy lifestyle.
