Massachusetts ranked first among public school systems in the country

by Sue Koch

Among all 50 states and the District of Columbia, Massachusetts was ranked first among all public school systems in the country, according to a study by WalletHub.

The study was conducted to rank all states according to their pubic school systems based upon two major dimensions: quality and safety. WalletHub took into consideration factors such as pupil to teacher ratios, high school drop out rates, graduation rates, median test scores and more. Each state was then given a total score, Massachusetts leading with a total score of 74.16 and New Mexico capping the list with a score of 31.53.

Massachusetts topped the list for both quality and safety rankings. Following close behind in terms of quality of public school systems were New Jersey, Connecticut and New Hampshire.

The Bay State was also ranked highly in individual categories during the study. It was ranked first for both the highest math and reading test scores, and second for the highest median ACT scores. Massachusetts also tallied the lowest rate of high school students who reported being threatened or injured at school, and ranked second-lowest in the reported bullying category.

School quality, especially that of public schools, is a key factor for homebuyers as they choose between different neighborhoods. Another recent survey found that most homebuyers would give up additional living space in a new home if it meant getting into a top-tier school district.
