Agent Snapshot: Tammy Downes, Realtor, William Raveis Real Estate, Scituate/South Shore

What was your first job in the realty industry? After spending 30 years working in law firms, it was on my bucket list to give real estate sales a shot, and I wish I had done that as an early career!

Where did you grow up? South Shore – Hull. I didn’t know anything existed north of Weymouth.

Growing up, what did you want to be? A jockey, against my mom’s wishes…

What do you do to relax when you’re stressed? I go to Longmeadow Farm in Scituate and love to muck the horse stalls and ride. It’s my home away from home and I try to make it part of my routine as much as possible. If a client calls, I just ask the horses not to whinny!

If you could have lunch with a well-known figure (living or not), who would it be and why? Princess Diana. I have an obsession with the British monarchy.

Where is your favorite place to hang out? Hands down, Longmeadow Farm Barn

What do you love most about the industry? Interaction with people, and the knowledge that a client could work with any number of excellent agents, but they chose me. With every transaction, I learn something new, and realize I will probably never have an identical transaction.

How do you distinguish yourself from the crowd of agents? I do what I say I’m going to do and I remember every detail, from initial customer contact to close of transaction. I met a customer at an open house and followed up with him months later when a new home came on the market that would accommodate his 94″ armoire. He appreciated that I remembered such a minute detail.

What is the most difficult aspect of your job? Convincing myself that not everything has to be done the same day

Where do you go to network and meet new clients? Volunteer opportunities, cold calls and mail campaigns. Most of my business has been referral based but I love the thrill of engaging a complete stranger with the enthusiasm of the real estate industry.

What has been your greatest accomplishment? Personally, completing a marathon after only training for a short time. Professionally, sales of $8 million after my first full year of real estate sales.

What was the last good movie you saw or book you read? Good? “Business Planning for Dummies.”

What is your favorite restaurant? Tosca Café, Hingham. The best Bolognese.

Architecturally speaking, what is your favorite building in Boston? The Custom House.

What kind of car do you drive? A Mercedes-Benz. I love the bling on my hood emblem. Lights up at night.

Smartphone or paper? Paper.

What is your favorite city after Boston? Washington, DC. On my bucket list is a White House tour.

In 10 words or less, what is your advice for someone new to the industry? Pick one to two business tasks you will accomplish in making your mark, and grow from that. The industry has so many tools and gimmicks, but find the ones that will yield a profitable return and will benefit your clients.

What’s your favorite real estate iPhone/Android app? iPhone 6

Who are your favorite people to follow on Twitter? I have never tweeted.
