Joseph Smith, Branch Manager & Loan Officer

Guaranteed Rate

Giving back to the community is a priority for Joseph Smith, branch manager and loan officer at Guaranteed Rate. He donates a portion of all sales to several charities, including local nonprofits Bridge Over Troubled Waters and Victory Programs, and national organizations GLAAD, Community Research Initiative, The Trevor Project and Guaranteed Rate Foundation.

A former captain in the Air Force, Smith has been in the lending business for 29 years. “Officers in the military are known for a high level of integrity and dedication,” he says. “My military experience helps me be an expert in VA loans, as I understand the pay structure and VA disability.” With a team of professionals who have been with him for about 17 years, he sees most business comes through referrals. “Given the time I’ve been in the industry, I have financed tens of thousands of loans for borrowers,” he explains. “We also have a great network of referral partners.”

In 2015, Smith was appointed to the company’s Chairman’s Circle for generating over $100 million in annual loan volume, and he continues to hold that spot today. In 2018, he was ranked No. 38 among Mortgage Executive Magazine’s top 200 mortgage originators in America and included in the top 1% of mortgage originators in the country. He also ranked No. 51 in 2019 and No. 83 in 2020 on the Scotsman Guide’s list of top originators in the country.

With numerous professional accomplishments, Smith reports his proudest personal victory  of 2022 came in January, when his family vacationed in the Bahamas and his son caught COVID. “We worked with the hotel in contacting the CDC for permission to enter the U.S. and chartered a medevac jet to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.” he shares. “We drove 48 hours to Boston double-masked, and thankfully, no other family members contracted the disease.”
