Massachusetts was named one of the safest states in the U.S., according to a new study from WalletHub.

The finance company ranked the 50 states based on metrics like personal security, emergency preparedness and safe roads. Massachusetts placed No. 2, surpassed only by Vermont. Northeastern states also dominated the remaining top spots, with Maine, New Hampshire and Connecticut ranking No. 3, 4 and 5, respectively.

The Commonwealth’s financially secure residents, low crime rates and family-friendly atmosphere helped boost its ranking.

The Bay State boasted the third-highest percentage of households that put money aside for emergencies and sixth for the percentage of people who saved for their children’s college education.

Plus, Massachusetts’ had the most children aged 6-17 whose parents felt strongly that their children were safe at school.

Crime didn’t pay in Massachusetts, which saw the eighth-fewest thefts, fourth-fewest murders and manslaughters per capita and 10th-fewest mass shootings between 2024 and September 2026.

“The safest states in America protect their residents from harm in a multitude of different ways, from keeping crime rates low and maintaining safe roadways to having strong economies and job markets that prevent people from falling into dangerous financial situations,” said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. “They have high levels of occupational safety and disaster preparedness, too. In addition, states are made safer by efforts that individual residents take, such as forming a neighborhood watch or working in firefighting and EMT jobs at high rates.”
