Study calls Massachusetts 2025’s best state to live in

by Elizabeth Kanzeg Rowland

Massachusetts was named the best state to live in by Wallethub, outranking every other state in the nation and placing first in the education and health category.

These top rankings, as well as the Commonwealth’s sixth-place finishes in safety and quality of life helped propel it to victory in Wallethub’s 2025 ranking of the best states to live in.

The state also boasted the lowest premature death rate in the country and the fifth-lowest share of adults in fair or poor health and claimed the highest share (97.4%) of residents with health insurance coverage.

Massachusetts residents enjoy the second-highest median household income at over $101,000 and one of the top 10 best high school graduation rates of around 90%.

With the third-lowest property-crime rate and third-best access to public transportation in the United States, Massachusetts also provides a safe and welcoming environment for families.

“When deciding on a place to move, you should first consider financial factors like the cost of living, housing prices and job availability,” said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. “Many states have strong economies, though, so you should also consider a wide variety of other factors, such as how where you live will impact your health and safety and whether you will have adequate access to activities that you enjoy. If you have children, a robust education system is also key.”
