Timothy Garvey
Broker Associate
Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Commonwealth Real Estate
Leading up to his more than three-decade career in real estate, Timothy Garvey first worked at a college in admissions, development and public relations. From there, he moved into yearbook publishing, took a job as executive director of a local chamber of commerce and appointed himself to the position of stay-at-home dad. In addition to his parenting duties, he conducted political polling and became licensed in both real estate and insurance. “I matched up a couple of chamber members (landlord and tenant),” says Garvey, broker associate with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Commonwealth Real Estate, who grew up watching his father and grandmother work in the industry. “My own move into real estate was at the suggestion of a chamber member, with the idea that I could schedule my time around my childcare responsibilities.”
From the start, Garvey did best with first-time buyers, a demographic that still makes up a significant part of his market in Winchester, Medford, Stoneham, Woburn and the surrounding communities, as well as the Boston metro area to the New Hampshire line. “I progressed from working directly with buyers and sellers to working with sales agents in development and training,” he says. “I also became actively involved in the professional Realtor organizations as a volunteer director, committee member and chairperson, including professional standards, government affairs, education and more.”
Involved in serving landlords and tenants, Garvey derives great satisfaction from turning a tenant into a buyer and a landlord into a seller. Even more satisfying is helping an unmarried person purchase their first property, assisting them in renting it out and later selling that same person a single-family home for their family.
Garvey volunteers with the Boston chapter of the National Association of Gay & Lesbian Real Estate Professionals. He also enjoys traveling, having checked Paris off his list this past August. “Everyone seems to have a bucket list — I’m no exception,” Garvey says. “I’d like to be an aviation pilot, take a serious cruise, enjoy a scenic cross-country train tour and more travel overseas.”
