Boston’s best school districts in 2026

Many people have chosen Boston as the place to live and raise their families because of the city’s excellent educational opportunities. With the new school year underway, Niche.com ranked school districts across the city based on graduation and enrollment rates, test performance, data from the U.S Department of Education and reviews from students, parents and teachers.

Public Schools of Brookline, Weston Public Schools and Lexington Public Schools ranked as Boston’s best school districts.

“Choosing the right school is one of the most important decisions a family can make,” said Luke Skurman, founder and CEO of Niche. “Our K through 12 rankings bring together rigorous data and real experiences from students, parents and educators. This gives families the clarity to choose schools where their children can succeed academically, thrive socially, and build a strong foundation for their future.”

Here’s a look at the highest-ranking districts in the area.

Public Schools of Brookline

Public Schools of Brookline took the No. 1 spot thanks to excellent academics and extracurricular activities — Niche gave the district an A+ for academics, teachers, administration, college prep and extracurriculars. The district has 7,039 students in grades pre-Kindergarten through 12, with a student-teacher ratio of 12 to one. State test scores show that 71% of students are at least proficient in math while 72% are proficient in reading. Students also graduate at a rate of 96% and score an average of 1380 on the SAT.

Public Schools of Brookline also ranked as the best of all 217 districts in the state and landed in first place on Niche’s list of the best places in Massachusetts to teach.

Weston Public Schools

Weston Public Schools ranked second in the city and received A+ distinctions for academics, teachers and college prep and an A for administration. The district currently serves 2,036 students in grades pre-K through 12 with a student-teacher ratio of 12 to 1. Over 75% of students are proficient in math and reading. Students in the district score an average of 31 on the ACT and graduate at a rate of 95%.

Weston Public Schools also ranked as the second-best in the state and the fourth-best place to teach statewide.

Lexington Public Schools

Lexington Public Schools took third place in city-wide rankings. Niche gave the district an A+ for teachers, academics and college-prep. Plus, clubs and activities all earned an A- or higher. The district has 6,805 students in grades pre-K through 12 and a student-teacher ratio of 10 to 1. State test scores show that 79% of students are at least proficient in math while 77% are proficient in reading. Students graduate at a rate of 98% and earn an average SAT score of 1400.

Lexington Public schools also ranked No. 3 in the state.
