Massachusetts named best state to live in for 2024

by Liz Hughes

For the second year in a row, Massachusetts ranks as the best state to live in the U.S., according to WalletHub’s 2024 Best States to Live In list

WalletHub compared all 50 states across five metrics covering affordability, economy, education and health, quality of life and safety. States were also compared across 51 livability indicators, including housing costs, income growth, job opportunities, education rates and the quality of hospitals.

The Bay State also secured the top spot in both education and health care.

“Massachusetts is the best state to live in, due in large part to its strong health care system and high-quality education,” said WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe. “Massachusetts has the lowest premature death rate in the country and the lowest share of adults in fair or poor health. The Bay State also ranks first in the nation for the quality of its school systems. In addition, Massachusetts has the third-highest median household income, at over $94,000.”

The report also noted Massachusetts has the fourth-best high school graduation rate in the U.S. at more than 90%.

It ranked sixth in quality of life, seventh for safety, 15th for economy and 44th for affordability.

Massachusetts also has the third-lowest property crime rate in the count and third-best access to public transportation.

Florida ranked second, followed by New Jersey, Utah and New Hampshire.
