Several Massachusetts cities named tops in America

Several cities in Massachusetts made WalletHub’s list of 2023’s Best Small Cities in America

Three communities ranked in the top 10 and five in the top 20. 

WalletHub compared more than 1,300 cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 across five metrics, including affordability, economic health, education and health, quality of life and safety. The cities were also compared across 45 key livability indicators, including housing costs, quality of school systems, number of restaurants per capita and crime rate.

Lexington ranked second on the list with a total score of 70.61. It received scores of 1 in education and health, 11 for safety, 156 in economic health, 144 in quality of life and 371 for affordability. 

Milton was seventh on the list with a score of 69.29, including 22 for education and health, 61 for safety, 462 for economic health, 119 for affordability and 585 for quality of life. 

Melrose ranked eighth with a score of 69.21, including 6 for education and health, 29 for safety, 65 for economic health, 360 for affordability and 824 for quality of life. 

Needham was 14th on the list with a score of 68.62, including 15 for education and health, 80 for safety, 243 for economic health, 224 for affordability and 531 for quality of life. 

Arlington rounded out the top 20 with a score of 68.08, including 4 for education and health, 13 for safety, 396 for economic health, 635 for affordability and 223 for quality of life. 

Other Massachusetts cities and towns on the list include Newton at No. 23, Reading (25th), Burlington (30th), Medford (44th), Belmont (54th), Waltham (68th), Randolph (77th), Somerville (92nd) and Dedham at No. 100.
