Former New England Casket Co. site to become housing, retail space

by Liz Hughes

The Boston Planning & Development Agency has approved plans to develop the former New England Casket Co. site in Easton Boston into residential housing and retail space.

The land, at 1141 Bennington St., has been vacant since the company was destroyed in a fire in March 2019.

In May 2021, the owners teamed with local developer Redgate with plans to refurbish the property, filing a letter of intent with the BPDA to create what they envisioned to be “a new and exciting future of the site.” The BPDA approved that plan at its Aug. 17 meeting.

The project site is 1.86 acres, and encompasses three parcels between Bennington Street and Austin Avenue and is close to public transportation. Once complete the transit-oriented, six-story, mixed-use building will include 220 residential units, with 31 designated income-restricted, as well as retail space and bicycle storage.

There will be ground-floor retail space, 121 vehicle parking spaces, 222 indoor bicycle storage spaces for residents and the retail space, as well as 44 public visitor bicycle spaces.

The project also brings area improvements, including publicly accessible open space, new crosswalks and bike lanes. A new bike crossing at Bennington Street, according to the filing, will “connect to the future shared-use path along Austin Avenue and reclaim excess pavement for enhanced public realm, landscaping, and green infrastructure.”

The project also creates a two-way separated bike lane on Bennington Street. The project will also contribute $60,923 to the Boston Transportation Department’s bike-share system.
