New future proposed for former New England Casket Co. site

by Liz Hughes

The owners of the New England Casket Co. have teamed up with a local developer to bring new life to the company’s East Boston property, which was destroyed in a nine-alarm fire in March 2019.

A letter of intent, filed on May 3 with the Boston Planning & Development Agency, outlines plans to redevelop the 1141 Bennington St. property. The Tobia family, which owned New England Casket Co. for more than 77 years, is working with real estate developer Redgate to create what they envision to be “a new and exciting future of the site,” according to the letter.

That future includes two six-story multifamily residential buildings with 221 units.

The letter says the family’s early planning efforts follow conversations and meetings with community members.

The New England Casket Co., founded by Fred Tobia, began in a small building in East Boston’s Maverick Square before expanding and moving to Bennington Street after World War II.
