16 Massachusetts cities make Best Small Cities in America list

Sixteen Massachusetts communities were recently named to Wallet Hub’s 2022 Best Small Cities in America list. Three of those towns ranked in the top 10 and 10 were in the top 30.

WalletHub compared more than 1,300 cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000, across five metrics including affordability, economic health, education and health, quality of life and safety. The cities were also compared across 43 key livability indicators including housing costs, quality of school systems and number of restaurants per capita. 

Lexington ranked fourth on the list of 1,300 cities with a total score of 70.58. It received scores of 4 in education and health, 7 for safety, 68 in economic health, 208 in quality of life and a score of 405 for affordability. 

Melrose was sixth on the list with a score of 70.42 including 10 for education and health, 22 for safety, 78 for economic health, 413 for affordability and 715 for quality of life. 

Needham ranked eighth on the list scoring 69.88. The town received scores of 20 in education and health, 26 in safety, 161 in affordability, 165 in economic health and 537 in quality of life. 

Lexington, Melrose and Needham all ranked in the top 1% of small cities in America, along with Milton (11th on the list), Arlington (17th), Burlington (18th) and Newton (19th). 

Portland, Maine was also in the top 1% ranking No. 9. 

Other Massachusetts cities and towns on the list include Randolph (22nd), Medford (29th), Reading (30th), Belmont (45th), Waltham (62nd), Wellesley, (73rd) Dedham (75th), Wakefield (78th) and Somerville (79th).
