Trulia has crunched the numbers to determine the best neighborhoods for living well by ranking “universally loved” features like quiet streets, parks and proximity to schools and healthcare. Now, the online real estate giant had determined how much a homebuyer needs to live in those neighborhoods. The Nonantum neighborhood in Newton made the list, but buyers will need to have a well-paying job to afford to live there.
Described as a “picture-perfect New England suburb,” Nonantum is a small, tree-lined neighborhood in close proximity to Boston and well connected via highways. Homes in the area have a lot to offer, but buyers will have to fork over a lot to buy them, too.
That’s because the median home price in the area is $867,000, according to Trulia. To afford such a home and be able to live in the area comfortably, buyers need to make $226,855 a year. (Nonantum is a relatively small area, so Trulia used Newton’s overall homebuying data to determine the required salary to live there.)
Of the seven most desirable neighborhoods that Trulia featured, Nonantum has the highest required annual salary needed to afford a home, beating out neighborhoods in hot markets like Seattle and South Florida.
