Boston is one of the most expensive cities for housing costs in the country. While it is expensive to live just about anywhere in the area, some areas are obviously much more expensive than others.

RentCafe, an apartment listing service, has listed the most expensive ZIP codes for renters in the United States, and Boston’s 02199 ZIP code covering a small segment of Back Bay is the 12th most expensive in the country.

Boston is the third city represented on the list, as New York and San Francisco zip codes make up the first 11 entries on the list. In fact, the top 20 most expensive zip codes are all in three cities: New York, San Francisco and Boston, and Boston only has the Back Bay ZIP code on the list, according to RentCafe.

In the 02199 zip code, the average rent is $4,227, according to RentCafe. Boston’s second-most expensive ZIP code is 02111 in Downtown, abutting Boston Common, where the average rent is $3,823. That’s only $100 less than the 20th most expensive Zip code overall, which is Manhattan’s 10128 on the Upper East Side.

Looking at Boston’s 20 most expensive ZIP codes for renters, nine of them are suburban areas. Cambridge had the highest-ranking suburban Zip codes, according to RentCafe.
