Construction began on Newton Armory, a development transforming historical army barracks at 1135-1137 Washington St. into affordable housing.

The collaboration between Metro West Collaborative Development and Civico Development aims to provide housing to the Newton area while maintaining historical elements of the building’s architecture.

Once completed, the renovation will create 43 affordable apartments restricted for those earning up to 30% or 60% of the area median income. Offerings include one-, two- and three-bedroom units.

Developers estimate construction completion in late 2026 or early 2027.

“We are very excited to work closely with the city and its constituents to bring 43 multi-generational affordable units to this historic building,” developers said in a press release.
