How far will a $1,500 rent budget go in Boston?

by Emily Marek

A $1,500 monthly rent budget will only get you so far in many of the biggest cities in the country. But how far can that same budget go in Boston?

Rentcafe used MLS data from 200 U.S. cities to determine which city offers the most square footage for $1,500 per month.

Nationally, $1,500 will on average get you a 782-square-foot apartment — of course, that size varies widely from city to city. For example, in No. 1-ranked Wichita, Kansas, $1,500 is a pretty sizable budget, with which you’ll be able to afford a 1,463-square-foot apartment. But in Manhattan, ranked lowest on the list — you’re unlikely to find even a studio apartment for that price (in fact, you’ll be crammed into just 243 square feet of space). It’s a similar story for most big cities on the East and West Coasts.

In Boston, the study estimated $1,500 will get you a 320-square-foot apartment. That space ranked No. 99 among the 100 cities with populations over 225,000. The city’s average rent is $3,820 for an average square footage of 814.

The next 100 largest cities, all with populations under 225,000, included Worcester and Providence. A monthly rent of $1,500 in Worcester will get you 707 square feet. The same budget will rent an average of 521 square feet in Providence. A $1,500 rent is below average for both communities.
