Massachusetts city makes Fortune’s Best Places to Live list

by Liz Hughes

A Massachusetts city has made Fortune’s 2024 Best Places to Live for Families list.

Fortune analyzed more than 2,000 cities across 200 data categories, assessing livability, financial health, resources for aging adults, education and wellness.

The winning areas are “sustainable for their youngest and oldest residents — including many fast-growing suburbs and edge cities that find creative ways to improve people’s well-being,” Fortune said.

The cities and towns that made the list are areas where multigenerational families can thrive, as older people are choosing to age in place with younger generations like Gen Z looking for a place they can truly call home.

Somerville broke the top 15, coming in at No. 11 on the list.

Located under 20 minutes from Boston, Somerville was noted for its convenient access to the city “while also feeling like its own separate space,” offering a “suburban-meets-urban vibe with an underlying college town feel, thanks to Tufts University.” And while it doesn’t have a downtown area, its proximity to Boston makes up for it. Plus, it has more than 60 parks within walking distance for most residents.

Massachusetts wasn’t the only New England community to make the list. Portsmouth, New Hampshire, ranked No. 10.

Silver Spring, Maryland, topped the list, followed by Upper Merion, Pennsylvania, and Chantilly, Virginia. Ann Arbor, Michigan, came in at No. 4 and Mason, Ohio, rounded out the top five.
