Which Boston ZIP codes offer the most — and least — space on a $1,700 rent budget

by Emily Marek

The average American spends roughly $1,700 on their monthly rent, according to a new report from RentCafe. But how far does that budget stretch across the ZIP codes that make up the Boston metropolitan area?

RentCafe analyzed apartment sizes in ZIP codes across the country to determine which areas give the typical renter the most bang for their buck. In Boston, renters can get the most apartment in Mattapan (02126), where a $1,700 monthly budget garners 681 square feet of space.

Conversely, Bostonians get the least space in the South Boston Waterfront zip code of 02210, where $1,700 only gets you 306 square feet — less than one-third of the national average of 944 square feet. That makes it the No. 35 most expensive ZIP in the entire country.

Several other Boston ZIP codes ranked among the most expensive in the country, including No. 39, Fenway-Kenmore (02215); No. 40, Back Bay (02116); No. 42, the Museum District (02115); No. 44, also Back Bay (02199); No 46, Chinatown (02111); No. 47, Allston (02134); No. 48, Kendall Square (02142) and No. 50, Wellington-Harrington/East Cambridge (02141).
