Boston among most educated cities in America

by Liz Hughes

Boston has been named one of the most educated cities in America in WalletHub’s 2023 Most and Least Educated Cities in America list

“Cities want to attract highly educated workers to fuel their economic growth and tax revenues,” said Adam McCann, WalletHub financial writer. “Higher levels of education tend to lead to higher salaries. Plus, the more that graduates earn, the more tax dollars they contribute over time, according to the Economic Policy Institute.”

To identify which cities have the most educated Americans, WalletHub compared the 150 largest metros across 11 key metrics under two core categories: educational attainment and quality of education and attainment gap. Those metrics included the percentage of adults age 25 and older with high school diplomas, some college experience, undergraduate and graduate degrees, public school system quality and quality of universities and enrolled students.

Boston ranked seventh overall with a score of 78.81, just below No. 6-ranked Durham-Chapel Hill, N.C. Beantown ranked seventh for educational attainment and fourth for quality of education and attainment gap.

Ann Arbor, Michigan, ranked No. 1, followed by San Jose, California, and Washington, D.C. San Francisco and Madison, Wisconsin, rounded out the top five.
