The state of Massachusetts will award $10 million a year in grants and incentives in an effort to encourage cities and towns to permit more development, The Boston Globe reported. Governor Charlie Baker was expected to formally announce the plan, Housing Choice Initiative, on Dec. 11.
The Globe reported that the state has a goal of adding 135,000 housing units in the next eight years, especially in the Boston area where the inventory of housing — specifically affordable housing — is dry.
“Our growing economy demands a robust and diverse supply of housing to support the Commonwealth’s continued growth and success,” Baker said in a statement, according to the Globe. “This initiative will maximize collaboration between state agencies, support innovation and data-driven policies, and provide municipalities with the user-friendly tools needed to create more housing where it’s needed.”
