Rick Scherer and Richard Clayton launched OnTo Mortgage LLC one year ago, creating lifelong relationships with clients that lead to repeat business and referrals.

Scherer leads a team of eight loan officers with his business partner and chief operating officer, Richard Clayton. Each of them has worked in lending for about two decades. Together they help families achieve the American dream or restructure their mortgages to put them in a better situation. “We give our clients a five-star experience,” Scherer says. “We give them all the information upfront and answer questions they have not even thought to ask.”

Scherer and Clayton started OnTo Mortgage with seven employees, a number that has since grown to 32. “I believe in integrity and having a ‘client first’ mentality,” Clayton says. “I will never sell or suggest a program or solution unless it solves a problem or places them in a better situation.”

The team provides quality service by listening to clients, understanding their needs and meeting them where they are. “When you can listen to your clients, uncover context and give them back exactly what they are looking for,” Scherer says, “it allows you to be effective in your job.”

The company made Banker & Tradesman’s “Best of 2020” list. For over a decade, Clayton has been among the Scotsman Guide’s top 1% of mortgage loan originators in the country. Scherer has been nominated for that title for the past 13 years and featured on Boston Agent’s Who’s Who list for the last three.

Through their new initiative OnTo Gives Back, Scherer and Clayton donate money each month from every transaction, purchase or refinance to a charity that their clients and referral partners nominate. They also participate in numerous charitable events.
