Massachusetts’s most livable communities

Worcester, Boston and Springfield top RentCafe’s list of Massachusetts’ most livable metros.

The rental company compared the largest Massachusetts metros based on socioeconomic and quality of life metrics using data from the U.S. Census Bureau and other sources.

Here’s how the top 3 performed:

Worcester

Worcester ranked No. 1 for livability in the Bay State and placed No. 10 nationally for its high quality of life.

Healthy living was never out of reach in Worcester, which boasted 26 healthcare providers per 10,000 residents. Plus, 91.2% of the metro’s population had access to exercise opportunities and healthy food.

In categories like commute times and cost of living, Worcester lagged, however. Around 44.5% of residents commuted more than 30 minutes, and the cost of living in the city sits 15% above the national average.

Boston

Beantown boasted the best quality of life in Massachusetts, and the eighth-best nationwide.

With a whopping 28 healthcare providers per 10,000 residents, the city offered plenty of wellness opportunities to its residents, 95.9% of whom had access to exercise facilities.

Boston residents still faced long commutes, as 42.4% of residents commuted more than 30 minutes. . Plus, the city’s cost of living sits at an eye-popping 41% above the national average, and 19.8% of its residents face severe housing problems.

Springfield

Springfield also scored well for quality of life in Massachusetts and took the No. 9 position nationally in this category.

The metro shone in the areas of health and wellness, boasting one of the lowest uninsured rates and highest number of healthcare providers in the country. Plus, 92.2% of residents had access to exercise opportunities.

Springfield’s livability came at a cost, however, with a cost of living that soared 41% above the national average.
