Ranking Boston’s suburbs for millennial buyers

by Mike Muhney

The Boston metropolis has become home to many college students and young professionals. In fact, David Wluka, a real estate agent and member of the National Association of Realtors, reported that within the last year 31 percent of property buyers in the greater Boston area were millennials. With the overcrowding of the city, nearby suburban locations are in demand. “These communities have all the vibrancy, access to the city — and they’re affordable,” said Wluka as he described the transferable locations.

With demand on the rise, Thrillist partnered with the National Association of Realtors in selecting the best Boston suburbs for millennials. The list included:

  • Beverly — Known for its hot music and performing arts scene, Beverly is a mecca for live entertainment in the form of plays, comedy shows, music and dancing any day of the week. While the suburb is packed with venues such as the  Larcom Theatre,  The Cabot, and the North Shore Music Theatre, Beverly’s culinary and shopping scene is also prevalent on Cabot Street and at the Beverly Port Marina.
  • Portsmouth —  Only an hour north of Boston, the coastal town of Portsmouth, New Hampshire has earned the nickname “millennial heaven,” from Black Trumpet chef/owner Evan Mallett for its booming foodie scene. At 17 square miles, Portsmouth is a smaller town, contrasting Boston’s packed streets.
  • Quincy — As the eighth largest city in Massachusetts, and with a population of close to 94,000, Quincy attracts residents with its 30 minute driving commute into Boston. “The downtown has undergone a redevelopment that is dynamic, and more and more young people are moving there,” says Wluka, describing the renovations the town s undergoing to accommodate its new and younger buyers.
  • Salem — With its witch-hunting history a thing of the past, Salem now attracts millennials with its 32 minute train ride from Boston, and its bewitching restaurant scene.
  • Worcester — An hour west of Boston, the former college town of Worcester is a city of renovations, accommodating university students and residents alike. The town provides extensive parks and outdoor landscape retreats from the city streets of Boston’s metropolis.
