This week in Boston real estate: A change in Boston’s skyline, public housing grants and more

by Pamela Peterson

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded awarded $80.8 million in annual funding to Massachusetts’ housing authorities, according to the Boston Real Estate Times. The grants are apart the HUD’s Capital Fund Program, which provides over three thousand public housing authorities to build, repair and renovate the public housing within their communities. HUD’s grant will help Massachusetts’ housing authorities provide the best housing for residents, funding large-scale innovations and energy-efficient upgrades.

In other news:

  • A potential ordinance that would regulate short-term housing rentals through companies like Airbnb and HomeAway left Boston city council members divided. WBUR reported that the plan would require homeowners who offer rentals to prove the unit as their primary address, as well as place a 120-night cap on short-term rentals in two- and three- family units. Supporters believe the proposal will improve Boston’s housing market while those against the plan say it will have a negative impact on owner-occupants. The council is expected to vote on the proposal.
  • A change to the Boston skyline is coming. WCVB Boston reported that on Thursday the Boston Planning and Development Agency approved a $1.3 billion plan to create a 664-foot-tall office and residential tower. The building will replace a current city-owned garage located at 115 Winthrop Square. The tower will be a 1.6 million square foot building that will offer space for nearly 500 residents and office space for approximately 3,500 jobs. Millennium Partners will be leading the tower’s construction.
  • Parking spaces around Boston are being sold for $30,000 up to $350,000, said Curbed Boston. The cheapest space available around the city is a small spot on Tremont St. in the Theatre District for $30,000. Although, that spot can only fit a compact car. So for the average sized vehicle, the most affordable spot is on Commonwealth Ave. in Brighton for $49,000. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the most expensive $350,000 space is on Charles St. Garage in Beacon Hill.
