New data from Trulia shows that people more are adept at searching for homes in their metro area’s suburbs than people who live elsewhere and are looking to move to that metro. In fact, 60 percent of all home searches around the country originate from the same metro area.

Boston may have a pricey residential real estate market — home prices can reach up to $400,000 above the market median, according to Trulia, but searches from locals reveal that they’re savvy and know where to get the most bang for their buck. The data reveals that affordable homes in the Boston metro area can be found between Brocktown and Interstate 3, where almost all homes are priced at less than the market’s median home price.

Locals of the Boston metro area most often searched homes in Hanson — 72 percent of the time — where the median home value is $369,474. Rounding out the top five most searched places by Boston metro locals are:

2. Hanover, where locals searched 71.8 percent of the time and where the median home value is $472,623.

3. Pembroke, where locals accounted for 71.5 percent of searches and where the median home value is $374,569.

4. Abington, where the median home value is $327,435 and where locals made up 71.1 percent of searches.

5. Rockland, which had the lowest median home value is $297,779 and where locals made up 71 percent of searches.
