New mixed-use development to bring 274 new residences to Allston

by Liz Hughes

The Boston Planning & Development Agency approved a new mixed-use development in Allston that will include hundreds of residential units, as well as retail.

The 180 Western Ave. project will convert several vacant commercial buildings and parking lots into a mixed-use development featuring residences, retail and restaurants.

Once complete, the seven-story building will house 274 residential units, including 41 income-restricted units, as well as bike storage and publicly accessible short-term bike parking.

Residential areas of the building will be all-electric in support of the project’s sustainability goals. The project also incorporates several area improvements, including 11,000 feet of new sidewalks and an “active cafe zone,” as well as new street trees to help increase the urban tree canopy and provide shade for the cafe zone to offer outdoor seating.

The project also supports the city’s transportation goals, contributing $81,615.75 to the bikeshare system and will also have an onsite Bluebikes dock.
