A former convent in South Boston will soon be home to area seniors.
The Boston Planning & Development Agency approved the project to convert the former St. Augustine Parish convent, known as McDevitt Hall, into housing.
Developer South Boston Neighborhood Development Corp. filed the small project review application with the BPDA in September.
The project includes renovating the existing five-story building built in 1926, keeping its facade intact, as well as adding a 12,730-square-foot addition in the rear of the building, which is located at 207 E St.
Once complete, the project will contain 35 one-bedroom affordable senior housing units and one resident manager unit.
According to the filing, 19 of the units will be for residents earning no more than 50% of the area median incoming and 16 for those earning no more than 30%.
The building’s first floor will include management offices, two elevators, an amenity area for residents and residential units. Floors two through five will include residential units and amenity areas.
Outside, the front courtyard design will include saving existing trees, while adding new landscaping, an entryway and seating area. There will also be covered bike storage on site.
The total cost of the development is estimated to be $24.2 million, including $14.1 million in construction costs.
