Small cities often provide peace and accessibility that larger metros just can’t offer. For buyers keen to enjoy all Massachusetts has to offer without the bustle of Boston, Lexington may be a great choice, especially since the city was just named one of the best small cities in America by WalletHub.
The finance company ranked cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 based on criteria like safety and affordability using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics and other sources. Lexington claimed fourth place, thanks in part to excellent education and stellar medical care.
The city ranked first in the nation among other small cities for safety and scored first place for health. Analysts noted Lexington’s high percentage of residents with health insurance and strong overall health outcomes.
Plus, Lexington residents enjoy outstanding educational opportunities. Lexington Public Schools were recently named one of the top three districts in the Boston area by Niche.com.
“Lexington ranked as one of the best small cities because it stands out in education, health and safety,” said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. “On top of that, it’s one of the safest small cities, placing in the top 15 nationwide. While it’s not the most affordable place to live, Lexington makes up for it with top-quality schools, reliable healthcare and safe neighborhoods, placing it solidly in the top 1% of small cities in America.”
Several other small Massachusetts cities made the top 30, including Arlington and Needham.
“Moving from a bustling metropolis to a small city could drastically cut down your cost of living,” Lupo continued. “The best small cities offer strong job markets, high-quality education, good health care, safe living conditions and plenty of local flair to help you achieve a high quality of life. While small cities may lack some advantages of big cities, like robust public transportation systems, they make up for these shortcomings in other areas.”
