Boston has been ranked one of the most livable cities in the U.S., according to a new RentCafe report.
The publication analyzed 140 U.S. metro areas across 17 key metrics including cost of living, health care and housing conditions. They were then grouped into three categories: socioeconomics, quality of life and location and community.
Beantown ranked 17th on the list overall and third for quality of life due to its easy access to organic food and lots of exercise options.
The publication called Boston a sports lover’s dream, noting that nine out of 10 residents live near a gym and 80% participate in physical activity. Plus, when it comes to health care, Boston has 28 providers per 10,000 people and has one of the lowest rates of uninsured individuals.
Boston also ranked 70th for location and community, noting that 69% of residents have higher education degrees. But long commute times and housing issues hurt its ranking here.
Socioeconomically, Boston ranked 115th, due to its cost of living being 42% above the national average, making it the sixth highest in the country. Income growth for Boston residents is steady, the report said, at 5%, but increased expenses weigh it down.
Portland, Maine, took the No. 1 spot, followed by Lincoln, Nebraska, and Des Moines, Iowa. Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Ann Arbor, Michigan, rounded out the top five.
