Massachusetts is one of the safest states in America according to a new report.
Simmrin Law Group analyzed FBI and National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) crime statistics, weighting them across 10 critical crime types to identify the 10 safest and most dangerous states in the U.S.
Massachusettts took the No. 8 position on this list with a safety score of 73.8. It had one of the lowest rates of homicide at 2.2 per 100,000 and forgery at 37.3 per 100,000. The report did note the Bay State’s area for improvement is in extortion/blackmail, where it had a rate of 8.8 per 100,000.
The safest state is New Jersey, with a score of 80. The Garden State also recorded the lowest assault rates at 430 per 100,000 people, along with a low rate of sex offenses at 25.2. Additionally, it has minimal burglary rates at 81 and theft rates at 608.2 per 100,000 people.
Second place went to Vermont with a safety score of 77.8. Vermont was noted for having the lowest extortion rate at 2.6 and a homicide rate of 2.3 per 100,000.
Maine took the No. 3 spot with a safety score of 77.2, along with the lowest homicide offense at 2.2 per 100,000, kidnapping/abduction at 1.8 per 100,000, and motor vehicle theft at 65.2 per 100,000.
Idaho and West Virginia rounded out the top five.
