Boston is the third most walkable U.S. city

by Barbara O’Connor

Boston is the third most walkable city in the U.S., according to Redfin’s 2017 rankings.

The report, released in May, only considers cities with populations over 300,000 and factors distance from amenities, density of population, block length and pedestrian friendliness into cities’ ultimate walkability scores.

Boston retains its No. 3 walkability ranking for the ninth year in a row. It also holds the same placement in another Redfin list: transit-friendly cities. Boston is the third most transit-friendly city following New York and San Francisco, which hold the first and second spots, respectively.

Boston is also the fourth safest metro area for walkers in the United States with a Pedestrian Danger Index of 18. The Smart Growth America study estimates the national average at 53.8, a number Boston significantly beats.

Boston is also being the No. 5 most bike-friendly U.S. city, according to Redfin. The city has a Bike Network Plan that reports  “double-digit increases in all types of bicycling each year.” The city’s local government understands biking’s positive impact and looks to increase it. Their Climate Action Plan outlines the city’s intention to increase the number of bike commuters by 10 percent as of 2020 in another effort to make their sidewalks more walkable and rideable.

With all of Boston’s benefits, it’s no surprise that 9 out of 10 locals surveyed in a recent Redfin study planned to stay in the area. The city’s walkability, travel-ability and safety remain appealing to its loyal residents.
