Roxbury’s Drexel Village project to bring income-restricted housing to public land

by Liz Hughes

The Boston Planning & Development Agency has approved a new project that will build income-restricted housing on public land in Roxbury.

The Drexel Village Project at 175 Ruggles St. will include the construction of three new mixed-use buildings, along with the renovation of the existing St. Katharine Drexel Church on the partially publicly-owned land.

Once complete, the entire project will include 217 housing units, a mix of homeownership and rentals, 190 of which will be income restricted.

The project will be built in phases. Building one, which will have 139 rental units along with retail space on the ground floor will be built first. The next two buildings will be built a few months later at the same time.

Building two will include a mix of homeownership and rental units, 60 in total. Building three will include 19 housing units as well as a new daycare and playground as part of the church renovation.

The project also brings several community benefits, including the creation of new public open space and new public art, both on site. It will also bring enhanced pedestrian and bike safety improvements, including new bike lanes and better sidewalks. The project will also contribute $74,122 to the Boston Transportation Department’s bikeshare system.
