Maria Tolman Real Estate Agent, Venture R. E., Boston

What was your most interesting job before going into real estate? I worked doing wardrobe for a theater.

Where did you grow up? A tiny town in Massachusetts called Baldwinville. It is a Village within the town of Templeton. It is a beautiful area in Central Mass.

Growing up, what did you want to be? A writer and an artist.

What do you do to relax when you’re stressed? I paint, draw, read, sew or garden.

If you could meet any well-known figure (living or not), who would it be and why? Winona LaDuke or Corretta Scott King because of their impact and the changes they spearheaded

What is Boston’s best-kept secret? There are a few vintage stores that are off the beaten path! I’m not telling :).

What do you love most about the industry? I love the fast paced work environment and meeting new people.

How do you distinguish yourself from the crowd of agents? Down to earth and straightforward.  I am not good at “blowing smoke.” Just tell it like it is.

What is the most difficult aspect of your job? The changes in the market, the highs and lows. I have been in the business for 20 years so I’ve had to learn to roll with the changes.

What’s your best advice for generating new leads? Reaching out to past clients, friends and family, both in person and through social media.

What has been your greatest accomplishment? It would be raising my two daughters as a single Mother. Nothing will ever top that.

What are you binge-watching/reading/listening to lately? A few design shows and “Fly on The Wall” podcast with Dana Carvey and David Spade.

What’s your favorite meal in Boston? Veggie Galaxy has great vegetarian meals.

Architecturally speaking, what is your favorite building in Boston? The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to you on the job? During a showing I had a homeowner unexpectedly come out of the shower! They forgot I was coming. I am not sure who was more embarrassed. We had one of those “deer in the headlights” moments!!

What’s one thing people are surprised to learn about you? I drive a 1956 Chevy and I have done a lot of the body work myself. I have owned it for 15 years and it probably will never be “finished” because I love to drive it too much to have it sit in a shop!

What is your favorite vacation spot and why? Maine. I used to take my daughters when they were little so going there brings about fond memories.

In 10 words or less, what is your advice for someone new to the industry? Be kind, honest and respectful to clients AND fellow agents.

What’s your favorite real estate iPhone/Android app? My CamScanner App is so handy for sharing documents.

Who are your favorite people to follow on social media? I mainly follow artists who inspire me creatively.

What are your social media handles? Maria Tolman Realtor on FB or my website MariaTolman.com
