by Liz Hughes

A new report says Massachusetts is one of the safest states in the nation.

Simmrin Law Group’s Safest and Most Dangerous States in America 2024 report analyzed FBI crime statistics and National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) data to weigh 10 critical crime types to identify the 10 safest and most dangerous states.

Massachusetts ranked No. 8 with a safety score of 73.8. The Bay State had the lowest homicide rate of 2.2 per 100,000 as well as a low rate for robbery at 37.7 per 100,000. Massachusetts’ main area for improvement, according to the report, was in extortion and blackmail where it had a rate of 8.8 per 100,000.

New Jersey topped the list. Vermont ranked second, followed by Maine in the No. 3 spot. Idaho and West Virginia rounded out the top five.

New York came in at No. 6, Rhode Island at No. 7, Maryland No. 9 and Connecticut at No. 10.
