Climate change is believed to be the cause of weather disasters that have wreaked havoc around the Northeast in the last few years. Experts believe those storms are only going to get worse. A Boston neighborhood is expected to get hit with some of those climate change effects, according to CNBC.
Seaport is one of Boston’s newest, fastest growing and most expensive neighborhoods. The neighborhood that once had little attention as an industrial hub is now one of the most popular places for Boston developers and residents.
Over the last ten years, almost $8 billion has been spent in residential and commercial real estate in Seaport, according to CNBC. The neighborhood has seen three times the amount of new construction than Boston’s larger areas, including the financial district and downtown.
The rising water levels and intense storms that are increasing because of climate change left experts declaring Seaport as Boston’s most vulnerable district, the publication reported. City researchers predict most of the Seaport area will be regularly under water in ten to 30 years.
Developers and city officials know the risks of what’s predicted to happen in the next decade or so, but there have been no rules or regulations to limit building in Seaport. Instead, there are only recommendations.
“Through the city’s zoning code, we were able to say, if you want to build a large building in the City of Boston, not only do you have to take into account what the climate projections are and the floodplains are right now, but you have to look at what those projections are in the future,” said Austin Blackmon, the head of the group Climate Ready Boston Initiative.
According to Deanna Moran, director of environmental planning at Boston’s Conservative Law Foundation, developers rely on the past when building for the future. A change for the future would require building and zoning codes changing on a state level, which is a long and tedious process, she said.
For now, developers will continue building with few new guidelines while they look to see how best to address the problem.
“Right now, we’ve already got significant number of buildings and assets that are already in harm’s way. But as we continue to grow the city, as we look at continuing to develop it, there’s actually an opportunity for those developments to be part of those protection processes,” Blackmon said.
