A new study from Coworking Cafe ranks Boston and Cambridge among the best cities for recent graduates to kick-start their careers, with Boston placing in the top 10 for large cities and Cambridge securing the No. 1 spot for small cities.

Coworking Cafe evaluated U.S. cities based on several factors, including the number of coworking spaces per 100,000 residents. The overall scores were weighted and grouped into three categories: employment, financial and lifestyle. Cities were then categorized by population size: small (up to 150,000 residents), medium (between 150,000 and 400,000 residents), and large (more than 400,000 residents).

Boston ranked eighth on the list, down from No. 7 last year. With 57% of its population holding a bachelor’s degree, the city boasts a 3.9% unemployment rate and a 6.9% rate of jobs reserved for graduates. Boston offers a high median income for graduates at $81,448, with 71.3% of jobs providing health insurance. Additionally, the city has 188 amenities and eight coworking locations per 100,000 residents.

Just across the Charles River, Cambridge, home to several world-renowned colleges and universities, scored best among small cities. 

It had the highest percentage of the population with a bachelor’s degree at 68.8% and the highest percentage of jobs reserved for grads at 6.9%. Cambridge also boasts a low unemployment rate (2.8%), a median income for graduates of $74,010 and 77.5% of jobs offer health insurance. In the leisure category, Cambridge also scored high with 334 amenities and 18 coworking locations per 100,000 residents.
