A former church in South Boston will soon become new housing, while a second project will bring even more new housing to the area. 

The Boston Planning & Development Agency approved two projects on E Street in South Boston at its June 16 meeting. 

The 354 E St. project will convert the former Saint Vincent DePaul Church into a six-story residential building.

The project will maintain the existing historical structure and architectural characteristics of the church, according to the filing, as it transitions the building into 35 rental units, six of which will be income restricted. They will be a combination of one- and two-bedroom units. 

A community room, which will be open to the public, is also part of the project, as well as inside and outside bicycle parking. The developer will contribute $110,000 toward the upkeep of three area parks as well as $9,625 toward the city of Boston’s bikeshare system. 

Supporting Boston’s resiliency efforts, the project’s design will meet LEED Gold standards and also provide residents with electric vehicle charging spaces.

Area improvements will also be made including new crosswalks and better sidewalks. 

The board also approved a second area project at 363 E St. that will consist of 24 residential units, four of which will be income restricted. 

The new, four-story multi-family residential development will be a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom units. Located close to public transportation, the building will also include interior and exterior bicycle parking and contribute $6,600 to Boston’s bikeshare program. 

The project’s developer will also contribute $90,000 to support parks and open space and provide electric vehicle charging space and is designed to meet LEED Gold standards.
