The Montlake ‘Spite House’

by Emily Marek

This 850-square-foot house, tucked in the Seattle neighborhood of Montlake, was built for good old-fashioned revenge.

Known as the “Spite House,” the pie-shaped property was constructed in 1925 after one woman won the front yard in her divorce settlement. The house was just the right size to block her ex-husband’s view from the home they had once shared, the current owner said in a YouTube video.

At its widest point, the house measures 15 feet across. At its narrowest, just 55 inches — barely big enough for a standard doorway.

Now, just in time for the home’s 100th birthday, it’s back on the market for $799,000, listed by Robert McGarty of Bushwick Real Estate Services.
