Developer seeks to bring new housing to South Boston

by Liz Hughes

A developer is proposing the construction of a mixed-use, multi-family commercial development which would bring more than 70 housing units to South Boston.

A project notification form for the property at 49-51 D St. was submitted to the Boston Planning & Development Agency by 97 Farragut LLC — Sing Ming Chan on May 30, nine months after the developer filed a letter of intent for the project last August.

Documents filed by the developer say the project responds to the “unique housing dynamics of the South Boston neighborhood, which suffers from a lack of both new rental and homeownership options for new professionals, empty nesters, active seniors and families.”

The proponent is looking to develop an underutilized commercial site into a new rental residential development with a nine-story mixed-use building with up to 71 multi-family units with 1,515 square feet of ground-floor commercial space.

The parcel is currently occupied by a two-story brick commercial building and accessory surface parking.

The project will also include 71 resident bike parking spaces and 15 visitor bike parking spaces. It will also provide affordable housing as required by the city of Boston’s Inclusionary Development Policy.

A public hearing is scheduled for June 20 with the public comment period closing on June 29.
